    THE BRIEF

    Bespoke cycle shelters

The University of Reading recently invested over £40 million into the redevelopment and refurbishment of the library in order to increase space for individual study to make better use of the areas on the Ground and 1st Floors.

Langley Design worked in collaboration with ISG to supply, deliver and install bespoke cycle shelters. Our flexible and bespoke manufacturing abilities enabled us to combine three design elements into the first unit.

    JOB TYPE:

    WHAT WE DID

    Secured cycle storage

Firstly, a covered area which acts as a smoking shelter was combined onto the back of a fully secured cycle storage area. This was achieved with timber cladding which not only improves the aesthetics of the unit but offers vital secure cycle parking for the site.

    ISG Logo

    THE RESULT

    Facetted curved design

The final element is a further covered area to store bikes under. The second unit was somewhat unusual in appearance, this is because it was based on a facetted curved design by the architect.

The unit follows the path line and ties in beautifully with the other landscaped areas. Langley Design have vast experience in creating bespoke products and were delighted to be chosen to work on this project.

We manufactured some beautiful Galvanised and Powdercoated benches (with litter bins to match) and also some grey granite plinth mounted versions.

The mixture in lengths really add to the project by allowing some individual reflection time on the smaller benches and then group activities and socialising on the larger ones. We completed the scheme with some pre cast concrete cubes and stainless steel removable bollards.

    THE RESULT

    Minimal maintenance

The use of recycled plastic means that these will require minimal maintenance and will look as good as new in decades to come.

The long run of galvanised steel cycle shelter offers great value by covering two runs of cycle hoops under one roof saving space and money.

    THE BRIEF

    Secure bicycle storage

Langley Design were delighted to work with Willmott Dixon on this £43 million office block expansion project in Billingham. As the leading UK manufacturer of timber shelters, we were happy to be specified by Ryder Architecture for this large timber enclosed cycle shelter.

The enclosed cycle shelter allows the residents of the state-of-the-art three-storey office block to store their bicycles securely. We were also responsible for the manufacture and installation of the bin store and smoking shelter to the site.

    WHAT WE DID

    Outdoor covered area

Each of the designs followed the same construction materials to create a stunning aesthetic across the site, the matching smoking shelter provided an outdoor covered area for office workers. All of these units had the added benefit of being provided with sedum roofs. A green roof has many benefits at economic, ecological and societal levels.

    THE RESULT

    Biodiversity in the city

A green roof provides a rainwater buffer, purifies the air, reduces the ambient temperature, regulates the indoor temperature, saves energy and encourages biodiversity in the city.

Green roofs are part of climate-proof construction. Willmott Dixon were extremely pleased with the end result and we look forward to working with them on the next project.
