THE BRIEF

Phase 1A at the Purfleet-on-Thames development offers 61 new homes with a large proportion being affordable housing and shared ownership. The architectural vision for this development was to transform this riverside area into a community built around green spaces with leafy streets and a strong visual aesthetic.

Langley Design worked with Sanctuary Homes and Exterior Architecture to design, manufacture and install multi-purpose, sedum roof bin and cycle stores for residents that blend seamlessly into the landscape and help keep the external spaces clean and tidy. Manufactured from TRC4 and cedar clad provides landscape-led, elegant storage facilities for residents.

WHAT WE DID

Aligned with the architectural vision of creating neighbourhoods with character, Langley Design crafted an aesthetically pleasing coordinated package of bin and cycle storage solutions for residents.

The Sheldon Bin Stores and Cycle Shelters were manufactured from Treated Redwood TRC4 with Cedar cladding and finished with Sedum roofs, combining durability with visual appeal. The green roof enhances biodiversity, encourages wildlife habitats and contributes to sustainable placemaking, while providing practical sheltered storage for residents..

Cedar cladding creates a distinctive, high quality aesthetic that complements residential surroundings. Timber braced gates fitted with hasp and staple fixings and padlocks allow easy access while ensuring secure storage for recycling containers, bicycles and garden equipment.

A range of storage sizes were installed across gardens, driveways and communal areas to meet varying spatial requirements and resident needs.

The package comprised:

  • 20 Sheldon Cycle Shelters located within private gardens
  • 20 Sheldon Bin Stores installed on driveways
  • 14 large Sheldon Bin Store & Cycle Shelter Combination Units positioned on driveways, providing flexible storage for bins, bicycles and additional household items

THE RESULT

Langley Design worked closely with Sanctuary Homes and Exterior Architecture to deliver a coordinated package of cedar clad bin and cycle storage that successfully supports the wider vision for a modern, well-designed, sustainable neighbourhood at Purfleet-on-Thames.

By combining durable TRC4 timber construction with biodiverse sedum roofs, Langley Design delivered a practical infrastructure that enhances residential amenity while contributing positively to the streetscape.

The elegant bin stores and cycle shelters integrate seamlessly into private and shared external spaces, helping to maintain tidy environments and encourage responsible waste management and active travel.

The varied unit sizes provide flexible, secure storage solutions that meet the everyday needs of residents without compromising the visual quality of the development.

Overall, the installation demonstrates how thoughtfully specified street furniture can support planning objectives for high quality placemaking, biodiversity net gain and cohesive neighbourhood character.
