Cycle parking that promotes biodiversity
Set along Bristol’s historic waterfront, McArthur’s Yard is a vibrant spot that combines history, community, and modern-day charm. As part of Bristol Docklands’ transformation, Hill Construction created this thoughtfully designed new housing development featuring 142 new homes with a focus on modern living, sustainability and community engagement.
A key element of the project brief was to create sustainable, secure and environmentally beneficial outdoor parking facilities for residents, with a focus on maximising capacity in high density areas. Langley Design collaborated with Hill Construction and Novell Tullett Landscape Architects to create custom-made Sedum Roof Cycle Shelters that would blend in with the aesthetics of the project, promote biodiversity and reduce rainwater runoff.
WHAT WE DID
High density, secure cycle parking for residents
Langley Design delivered three fully bespoke, high density sedum roof cycle shelters each equipped with two-tier cycle racks and sliding steel mesh gates to maximise cycle parking capacity at McArthur’s Yard.
Each of the cycle shelters were fully enclosed, clad with timber for added weather protection and the sliding steel mesh gates were designed and installed to optimise space restrictions on the site providing extensive and secure cycle parking for residents.
Crafted from Class 4 Treated Redwood the cycle shelters offer a more natural feel blending seamlessly into the landscape. The sedum roofs are a popular choice particularly in residential areas, promoting biodiversity and helping offset part of the site’s carbon footprint.
Two-tier cycle racks were part of the solution offering higher storage capacity in areas with limited space and allowing the client to meet the increasing demand for cycle parking of city residents.
THE RESULT
Green roof shelters blend into the landscape
Creating custom-made cycle shelters, with sliding steel mesh gates, and two-tier cycle racks allowed Langley Design to create as many cycle parking spaces as possible for this newly developed residential area.
By understanding the specific needs and space challenges of this site, and working collaboratively with Hill Construction, Langley Design delivered high quality bicycle parking for the project, on time and within budget. The end result enabled the architect and client to meet the sustainability goals and create a space savings solution that integrates perfectly with the historic docklands landscape
